Major Goal: Move from Victim to Author. See Kait’s opening post here.
Protect Time
Schedule one hour every day. Life happens, but I must try to make writing time happen at least 4 out of 7 days.
Connect
With RoWers twice a week, both my assigned folks and others as possible.
Facebook 15 minutes every other day. More is falling down the rabbit hole.
Twitter half hour twice a week. Also a rabbit hole.
Organize
Hard drive to find best version of dissertation and fiction writing.
Email so that I can find things.
Paper files, especially of craft books and notes thereon.
Write
Dissertation; yes, a long story, but the dissertation is back in play.
Novel; the dissertation research is the foundation of the worldview of the novel.
Memoir; writing the memoir is helpful to my sanity.
If you are unfamiliar with a Round of Words, or ROW80, click here to read more about it from the creator of the challenge, Kait Nolan. It is a writing challenge that “knows you have a life.” Its flexibility is often helpful.
Please go visit around the other ROWers, whom you can find here. Encourage as you can, share strategies, make friends. It is a wonderful community.
I am the youngest of four children, raised in the old-fashioned Irish-American way. I suspect my mother encouraged me to write from an early age to keep me out of her hair, although she may have regretted the decision when my teachers began to call about the controversial stories I was writing. Thus I began my career of butting heads with the good sisters at my Catholic elementary school, and ended it by leaving high school for college with no diploma. I wear my high-school dropout badge rebelliously and proudly.
In college, I became fascinated with the Middle Ages, which was described as a “starry night” by one of my professors. So began a trek through languages and legends that informs my narrative non-fiction and historical fiction, as well as my blogs.
I love feedback and enjoy discussing ideas. I have an accountability blog for the Round of Words in Eighty Days entitled Leavekeeping; I write a blog on literary history, intellectual history, and the history of words entitled Lapidary Prose. I'm on Twitter and Facebook; my email is lapidaryprose@gmail.com.

So know those rabbit holes well! good description. Well thought out goals – all the best this round.
Thank you, Bev! All the best on your goals, as well!
Ah, yes… rabbit holes. Been there a few many times myself of late. Your limits sound sane and wise, and… awe inspiring. I wish I could shut myself off of the feed some days.
Can I say that I love how you’ve fit the dissertation into your goals? Can I help you with that writing time?
It’s hard for me to shut off the feed–it’s truly intoxicating for me, but I’ll never get anything written otherwise.
Thanks for the kind words on the dissertation–and yes, definitely, you can help with that writing time.
Feeds of almost any kind are intoxicating to me… Reddit? I’m there. Twitter? Ooh! Facebook? Google+? Diaspora (a more artsy opensource version of Facebook/G+)? YES!
It’s about rationing. I was watching a video on how addiction develops and how our dopamine receptors are triggered by certain activities and chemicals… I have to wonder sometimes if they shouldn’t do a study on how Social Media affects our brains too.
I also wonder if the addictive effect of social media is due to the solitude of researching, writing, and essentially living in one’s own mind a lot. It also allows the introvert to dip in and out as we have the energy to do so. Definitely, studies are in order!
Studies… and lots more time on social media, with lattes. Definitely with lattes.
Good luck with your goals for this round.
Thank you, Fallon. And good luck to you, too.
Good luck with your goals! I’ve pretty much given up on Facebook and Twitter and only use them when absolutely necessary. 🙂
Thank you, Ruth. This is an experiment to see if I can limit the use of Facebook and Twitter, or whether I’ll have to avoid them even more.
